Chiropractic Care For Your Newborn
"What is chiropractic care? Should my baby see a chiropractor? Is chiropractic care safe for newborns?"
These are just a few of the questions we receive here at Vocal Birth Doula Services from new parents when presented with chiropractic care as one of the many options available to them for caring for their new babies.
Today, Dr. Ashley Seaver of Spa City Chiropractic joins us to answer these common questions (and more!) about chiropractic care for infants.
So let's jump right into the interview!
Q: First and foremost, what is chiropractic care? What is it's purpose?
A: Chiropractic care is a natural form of healthcare that evaluates, treats, and prevents musculoskeletal disorders of the body especially dealing with the joints, nervous system, and soft tissues. The purpose of chiropractic care is to restore function of the joints and muscles while supporting the nervous system to allow for healing and optimal communication between the body and the brain.
Q: Is chiropractic care safe for infants? Even newborns?
A: Yes, chiropractic care is very safe and gentle for infants and newborns! Chiropractic can be used as an alternative to more non-conservative forms of treatments.
Q: So, what is an adjustment like for newborns/infants?
A: The pressure used for an adjustment for a newborn and infants is the same amount of pressure that you can comfortably apply to your eye, or the pressure you would use to check the ripeness of a peach.
There are several different techniques that can be used to adjust newborns and infants, and they are very different than the typical adjustment you would think of for an adult. Instruments can be used, such as an activator, or gentle manual pressures can be used to make corrections.
Q: What are the benefits of chiropractic care for such young patients? When should they see a chiropractor, and how often?
A: One of the most important benefits for newborns, infants, and even adults is that chiropractic allows the nervous system to work optimally, which is important since your nervous system is in control of your body.
It is especially important for all newborns to get checked as soon after birth as possible. No matter the birthing experience, there can still be uneven forces placed upon the spine, especially the neck of a newborn, and even more if manual or instrument assistance is needed during delivery.
After the initial visit, if there are no issues, I do recommend monthly visits, or checkups at the beginning of each developmental milestone such as lifting their own head up, rolling over, sitting up independently, crawling, standing up, and walking. At each of these milestones, the spinal curvatures are being formed, and it is important to make sure the spine is developing properly so that the child is able to grow and function optimally.
Q: Are there specific ailments that may benefit from chiropractic treatment?
A: Chiropractic care can help with a lot of ailments such as breastfeeding difficulties, constipation, acid reflux, other digestive issues, colic, ear infections, the common cold, crawling difficulties, sleeping difficulties, and so much more! It is also important to note than a child does not have to have an ailment to benefit from chiropractic care, but instead receive care to help prevent issues from happening by supporting the body during growth and development.
Q: Finally, when searching for a chiropractor for an infant, what kinds of questions should parents ask? What qualifications do they need to look for?
A: While all chiropractors are trained to treat infant and newborns, chiropractors that have been trained by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) may feel more comfortable doing so, and may have a little more insight into treating newborns and infants. A certification that can come along with training with the ICPA is the Webster Technique certification, which is great for pregnant moms.
